Physical techniques like pressure‑driven filtration, membrane distillation, and air stripping remove nitrogen by separating it from the liquid phase or by converting dissolved gases into vapors. In the context of groundwater remediation, in situ bioremediation with electron donors such as methanol can stimulate denitrification without excavating contaminated material.

Regulatory frameworks in many countries set discharge limits for total nitrogen in effluents. Continuous monitoring of nitrogen species, combined with adaptive process control, ensures compliance and protects downstream ecosystems. Advances in genetic engineering, microbial consortia design, and sensor technology continue to expand the range of effective nitrogenremoving strategies, aiming for higher removal efficiencies, lower operating costs, and reduced environmental footprints.
