Nitridoida is a term used in inorganic chemistry to denote a broad family of compounds containing nitrido ligands, N3−, bound to metal centers. These species include both terminal nitrido complexes, where a single metal is bound to one nitrido, and multinuclear nitrido-bridged clusters in which the nitrido ligand connects two or more metals. The concept highlights the diverse structural motifs and coordination environments in which nitrido ligands can participate.

Bonding and structure are central to nitridoida. The nitrido ligand is a strong σ-donor and a π-donor, often forming short, multiple bonds to transition metals. In terminal nitrido complexes, the metal–nitride bond resembles a triple bond in simple ionic models, while in bridged clusters the nitrido can act as μ-bridging ligand, linking several metals and supporting multinuclear centers. The oxidation state of the metal is frequently high, and the nitrido ligand itself is typically formally negative.

Synthesis methods for nitridoida include direct nitridation of metal precursors, transfer of a nitrido fragment from precursors such as metal azides, and high-temperature or photochemical routes that promote nitrogen transfer to metals. Stabilization often relies on bulky ligands or favorable electronic surroundings that accommodate the high oxidation states and unusual bonding. Depending on the system, nitridoida can exhibit remarkable stability and be receptive to further transformations.

Nitridoida comprises several classes, from simple terminal nitrido complexes of early transition metals to complex multinuclear nitrido clusters and actinide nitrides.
