Nissenfundoplikatio, often referred to as a Nissen fundoplication, is a surgical procedure to correct gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It involves wrapping the upper part of the stomach, known as the fundus, around the lower esophagus. This wrapping reinforces the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), the valve that normally prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus. By tightening this valve, the Nissen fundoplication aims to reduce or eliminate symptoms of GERD, such as heartburn, regurgitation, and chest pain.

The procedure is typically performed laparoscopically, meaning it is done using small incisions and specialized instruments, including a camera. This minimally invasive approach generally leads to shorter recovery times and less scarring compared to traditional open surgery. During the surgery, the surgeon carefully mobilifies the fundus of the stomach and then sutures it around the distal esophagus. The extent of the wrap can vary; a full wrap (360 degrees) is the most common, but partial wraps also exist.

Candidates for Nissen fundoplication are usually individuals whose GERD symptoms are severe and not adequately controlled by medication or lifestyle changes. It is also considered for those experiencing complications of GERD, such as esophagitis or Barrett's esophagus. While effective for many, potential risks and complications of the surgery include difficulty swallowing, gas bloat syndrome, and the possibility of the wrap loosening over time, leading to recurrent reflux.
