Nimios are a genus of small, flightless birds belonging to the family Anatidae, which also includes ducks, geese, and swans. These birds are native to the southwestern Pacific Ocean, primarily found on the subantarctic islands of New Zealand. The genus currently contains only one recognized species, the Auckland Island teal (Anas aucklandica), though historically, other closely related species were recognized.

Nimios are characterized by their compact bodies, short wings, and mottled brown and white plumage, which provides excellent camouflage in their island environments. They are primarily aquatic and feed on small invertebrates, crustaceans, and aquatic vegetation. Their diet is diverse and adapted to the resources available on the islands they inhabit.

Breeding typically occurs in burrows or dense vegetation, with females laying small clutches of eggs. Both parents participate in incubation and raising the young. Nimios are generally shy and elusive, often foraging at dawn and dusk. Their survival is closely tied to the health of their island ecosystems, and they are considered particularly vulnerable to introduced predators such as rats and stoats. Conservation efforts are in place to protect their habitats and monitor their populations.
