Niiskustimbekad, also known as moisture indicators or desiccants, are materials that absorb or adsorb moisture from the surrounding environment. They are commonly used to protect products from the damaging effects of humidity during storage, transportation, and use. These substances are typically crystalline solids that have a strong affinity for water molecules.

The primary function of niiskustimbekad is to lower the relative humidity within a sealed package or enclosure. This prevents issues such as corrosion of metal parts, degradation of electronic components, mildew growth on textiles, and clumping of powders. They achieve this by either adsorbing water vapor onto their surface or absorbing water into their internal structure.

Common types of niiskustimbekad include silica gel, activated clay (bentonite), molecular sieves, and calcium chloride. Silica gel is a porous form of silicon dioxide that can absorb a significant amount of moisture. Activated clay is a natural absorbent, often used for bulkier items. Molecular sieves are synthetic zeolites with a highly uniform pore structure, making them very effective for specific applications. Calcium chloride is a highly hygroscopic salt that can absorb a large quantity of water, sometimes forming a liquid brine.

Niiskustimbekad are often packaged in small sachets or canisters that are placed inside product packaging. The amount of niiskustimbekad used depends on the volume of the enclosure, the expected humidity levels, and the sensitivity of the product to moisture. Once saturated, they lose their effectiveness and may need to be replaced or, in some cases, reactivated by heating to drive off the absorbed moisture.
