While individual neutrons are typically considered to be in random thermal motion, under specific conditions, a net flow or drift of neutrons can be established. The existence of neutron currents can arise from several factors. A significant neutron flux gradient within a medium can induce a current as neutrons move from regions of higher density to regions of lower density. This gradient can be caused by neutron generation, absorption, or leakage.
