Neutrondetection refers to the process of identifying and measuring neutrons. Neutrons are subatomic particles with no electric charge, making them difficult to detect directly. Their presence is typically inferred through their interactions with other matter. Several methods are employed for neutrondetection, often relying on nuclear reactions that produce charged particles or photons, which are then easier to detect.

Common detection techniques involve using materials that readily capture neutrons, such as helium-3, boron-10, or lithium-6. When a neutron is captured by one of these nuclei, it often results in the emission of charged particles. For example, helium-3 captures a neutron and releases a proton and a triton, both of which are charged and can be detected by standard charged particle detectors like proportional counters or scintillators. Boron-10, when capturing a neutron, can also produce charged particles that ionize a gas within a detector.

Another approach utilizes materials that become radioactive after neutron capture, emitting gamma rays or other detectable radiation. Scintillation detectors, employing materials like lithium-6 scintillators, can emit light when a neutron interacts with them, which is then converted into an electrical signal. The choice of detection method depends on factors such as the energy of the neutrons, the desired sensitivity, and the specific application, which can range from nuclear physics research and safeguards to homeland security and industrial gauging.
