Neutrinobeams are concentrated streams of neutrinos produced artificially for scientific research. Neutrinos are fundamental subatomic particles with very little mass and no electric charge, making them notoriously difficult to detect. Creating a beam allows physicists to study their properties and interactions with matter in a controlled environment.

The process of generating a neutrinobeam typically begins with a particle accelerator, such as a synchrotron, that accelerates protons to very high energies. These high-energy protons are then directed to strike a target, often made of a dense material like beryllium. The collision creates a shower of other particles, including pions and kaons. These unstable particles then travel down a decay pipe. As they decay, they produce neutrinos, along with muons. Magnetic horns are often used to focus the charged particles, directing the resulting neutrinos forward and thus creating a beam.

The primary use of neutrinobeams is in neutrino oscillation experiments. Neutrinos are known to change "flavor" (electron, muon, or tau) as they travel. By producing a beam of one flavor and detecting the change in flavor at a distant detector, scientists can measure the oscillation parameters, which are crucial for understanding neutrino masses and the Standard Model of particle physics. These beams are also used to study neutrino-nucleus interactions, providing insights into nuclear structure and the fundamental forces.
