neuterpredicative

Neuterpredicative is a term used in linguistic description to refer to predicative constructions in which the predicate bears features associated with neuter gender. It is encountered primarily in discussions of languages with grammatical gender or noun-class systems, where predicative material (often adjectives or nouns used as predicates) must agree with the subject in gender.

In such accounts, a neuter predicative form may involve agreement in neuter gender on the predicative adjective or on the predicative noun, especially in copular sentences. The phenomenon helps distinguish how neuter predicates function in contrast to masculine or feminine predication and is sometimes analyzed as a distinct morphosyntactic pathway within the copular system.

The term is not widely standardized. Some linguists use "neuter predication" or simply "neutered predicative" to describe similar patterns, and there is no universal definition. Descriptions vary by language family and theoretical framework; some emphasize feature matching, others focus on the availability of neuter forms in predicative slots independent of subject agreement.

Cross-linguistic patterns vary: in many gendered languages, predicative adjectives in neuter contexts show the neuter endings, whereas in others predication is realized with neuter nouns or pronouns. The concept is thus principally a descriptive tool rather than a universally recognized grammatical category.
