Neuroprotection refers to the strategies and treatments aimed at preventing or slowing down the death of nerve cells, also known as neurons. These strategies are crucial in managing a wide range of neurological disorders and injuries where neuronal loss is a primary cause of functional decline. Conditions such as stroke, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury are all areas where neuroprotective approaches are actively researched and, in some cases, applied.

The mechanisms underlying neuroprotection are diverse. They can involve protecting neurons from damage caused by excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, inflammation, or lack of oxygen and nutrients.
