Neuronavigation, also known as image-guided surgery, is a medical technology that utilizes pre-operative imaging and intra-operative tracking to provide surgeons with real-time guidance during procedures. This technology aims to improve the accuracy and precision of surgical interventions by allowing surgeons to visualize the surgical field in relation to patient anatomy, often in three dimensions.

The process typically begins with the acquisition of medical images, such as CT or MRI scans, before the surgery. These images are then loaded into a specialized neuronavigation system. During the operation, the patient's anatomy is registered with the pre-operative images, establishing a link between the patient and the navigation system. Various tracking instruments, such as optical or electromagnetic trackers, are used to monitor the position of surgical tools and the patient's anatomy in real-time.

The neuronavigation system displays the location of the surgical instrument on the patient's anatomical model, superimposed onto the live surgical view or on a separate monitor. This allows surgeons to precisely locate critical structures, such as nerves or blood vessels, and plan their trajectory more effectively. Neuronavigation is widely used in neurosurgery for tumor resection, deep brain stimulation, and other complex procedures.
