Nettovekten, or net weight, is the mass of the contents of a packaged item excluding the packaging and container. It represents the amount of product a consumer actually receives and is a key factor in pricing, labeling, and product comparisons. The term is used in many languages, including Swedish and Norwegian, and is often shown on packaging as a numerical quantity with units such as grams or kilograms.

Nettovikten is calculated from the gross weight minus the tare weight. The gross weight includes both the contents and the packaging; the tare weight is the weight of the packaging and container. The net weight therefore reflects only the product itself. In practice, scales and weighing procedures are used to determine these values, with tare commonly set to zero before adding the product to obtain the nettovikt.

Labeling and regulation: In many jurisdictions, the nettovikten must be indicated on the packaging, for example as “net weight: 500 g” or “Net wt: 1 lb.” Some regulations also require disclosure of gross weight and/or tare weight, or provide a method for consumers to verify the nettovikt. The exact requirements vary by country and product category, but the net weight is generally intended to ensure transparent and comparable information for buyers.

Applications and considerations: Nettovikten is particularly important for consumer goods sold by weight or volume, such as food, liquids, and bulk items. It is distinct from volume measurements and can be affected by packaging integrity, air content in bags, and measurement precision.
