Nestekidenäytön, often abbreviated as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), is a type of flat panel display that utilizes the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. These crystals do not emit light themselves but rather block or allow light to pass through, or can twist polarized light. In an LCD, a backlight source, typically LEDs or fluorescent tubes, provides the illumination. This light passes through polarizing filters and then through the liquid crystal layer.

The liquid crystals are arranged in a matrix of tiny pixels. Each pixel's orientation can be controlled by applying an electric voltage. By altering the voltage, the twist of the liquid crystals changes, which in turn affects how much light from the backlight passes through the second polarizing filter. This modulation of light intensity creates the visible image. Color LCDs achieve their color by using a color filter array, where each pixel is further divided into sub-pixels that are colored red, green, or blue. The intensity of each sub-pixel is controlled independently, and when viewed together, they form a full-color image.

LCD technology is widely used in a variety of electronic devices, including televisions, computer monitors, smartphones, tablets, and digital cameras. Its popularity stems from its relatively low power consumption, thin form factor, and good image quality. Advancements in LCD technology, such as LED backlighting and improved pixel response times, have further enhanced their performance and appeal.
