Nestekidenäyttöjä, often abbreviated as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), are a type of flat panel display that utilizes the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals do not emit light themselves but instead either block or allow light to pass through from a backlight or reflector. In a typical LCD, a backlight illuminates the display from behind. This light then passes through a series of filters and polarizers, as well as the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystals are controlled by electrical signals that alter their alignment, thus controlling how much light passes through and creating the image seen on the screen.

The basic structure of an LCD includes a backlight, a polarizing filter, a glass substrate with electrodes, a liquid crystal material, another glass substrate with electrodes and color filters (for color displays), and an outer polarizing filter. When a voltage is applied to the electrodes, it causes the liquid crystal molecules to twist or untwist, changing the polarization of the light. This change in polarization is then either allowed or blocked by the second polarizing filter, forming the pixels of the image. Color LCDs achieve full color by using red, green, and blue sub-pixels for each pixel, controlled independently. LCD technology is widely used in televisions, computer monitors, smartphones, tablets, and many other electronic devices due to its energy efficiency, thinness, and image quality.
