Nestekidenäyttö, often abbreviated as LCD (Liquid Crystal Display), is a type of flat panel display that utilizes the light-modulating properties of liquid crystals. Liquid crystals do not emit light themselves but rather block or allow light to pass through. In an LCD, a backlight source, typically LEDs or fluorescent lamps, is placed behind the liquid crystal layer. This backlight provides the illumination that we see as an image on the screen.

The core of an LCD is the liquid crystal material sandwiched between two polarized glass panels. When an electric current is applied to specific segments of the liquid crystal, their molecular alignment changes. This change in alignment affects the polarization of the light passing through them. The second polarized glass panel, oriented at a different angle to the first, then either allows this altered light to pass through or blocks it, creating the pixels that form the image. Different colors are achieved by using filters in front of the pixels, with red, green, and blue subpixels combining to create the full spectrum.

LCD technology is widely used in a variety of electronic devices due to its relatively low power consumption, thinness, and good resolution. Common applications include computer monitors, televisions, smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, and portable media players. Over the years, LCD technology has evolved significantly, leading to improvements in brightness, contrast ratios, response times, and color accuracy.
