Nervtrafik is a term used to describe the signaling processes that carry information through the nervous system. It covers both the electrical activity that travels along neurons and the chemical communication that occurs at synapses between neurons, as well as the transmission of signals to muscles or glands. The concept encompasses central and peripheral pathways and underpins sensation, movement, and many aspects of behavior and cognition.

At the core of nervtrafik is the action potential, an all‑or‑none electrical impulse that travels along a neuron’s axon. Neurons maintain a resting membrane potential and, when stimulated beyond a threshold, open voltage‑gated ion channels that allow ions such as sodium and potassium to cross the membrane. This rapid ion movement depolarizes the cell and propagates the impulse. Myelin sheaths around many axons increase speed through saltatory conduction, with impulses jumping between gaps called nodes of Ranvier.
