Nenäpolyypit, also known as nasal polyps, are soft, teardrop-shaped growths that develop in the lining of the nasal passages and sinuses. They are typically benign, meaning they are not cancerous, and are often associated with chronic inflammation.

The exact cause of nasal polyps is not fully understood, but they are frequently linked to underlying conditions such as chronic sinusitis, asthma, cystic fibrosis, and allergies like allergic rhinitis. Irritation and inflammation of the nasal and sinus lining over time can lead to the formation of these polyps.

Symptoms of nasal polyps can vary depending on their size and location, but commonly include a blocked or stuffy nose, persistent runny nose, postnasal drip, reduced or lost sense of smell and taste, facial pain or pressure, and snoring. In some cases, they can also lead to recurrent sinus infections.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination of the nasal passages, often with the aid of a small camera called an endoscope. Imaging tests such as CT scans may be used to visualize the size and extent of the polyps and to assess the sinuses.

Treatment options depend on the severity of the symptoms and the size of the polyps. They often begin with medical management, which may include corticosteroid nasal sprays or oral corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and shrink the polyps. Antibiotics may be prescribed if a sinus infection is present. In cases where medical treatment is insufficient or polyps are causing significant obstruction, surgical removal may be recommended. This is typically done endoscopically, a minimally invasive procedure.
