Neliväritulostus, also known as CMYK printing, is a method of producing a full spectrum of colors using a subtractive color model. The acronym CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, and Key (Black). These four colors are the primary inks used in the process.

In neliväritulostus, different colors are created by combining these four inks in varying percentages. Cyan, magenta, and yellow are the subtractive primaries, meaning they absorb certain wavelengths of light and reflect others. When layered together, they can create a wide range of hues. For instance, combining cyan and magenta produces blue, while magenta and yellow create red.

Black ink, or "Key," is included for several reasons. It provides a deeper, richer black than can be achieved by mixing the other three colors, which often results in a muddy brown. Black ink is also essential for printing text and fine details, ensuring sharpness and readability.

The process typically involves a digital file that is separated into four individual color plates or screens. Each plate corresponds to one of the CMYK inks. During printing, these plates are applied sequentially to the substrate, such as paper, with each ink layer building upon the previous one. The precise dot patterns and percentages of each ink determine the final color and image.

Neliväritulostus is the standard for most commercial printing, including magazines, brochures, packaging, and photographs, due to its ability to reproduce a broad range of colors accurately and efficiently. While it can create a vast array of colors, it has limitations in reproducing extremely vibrant or fluorescent colors, which might require additional spot colors.
