Neformalnost, or informality, is the quality or condition characterized by the absence of formal rules, procedures, or attire. In South Slavic languages such as Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian, the noun neformalnost is formed with the negation prefix ne- attached to formalnost (formality). It is used to describe social behavior, linguistic styles, and organizational practices that operate outside official norms.

In social life, neformalnost denotes casual behavior, informal speech, lenient etiquette, and a relaxed dress code. It can foster closeness, spontaneity, and flexibility in personal interactions, but may also reduce predictability and formal accountability. The degree of neformalnost often varies across situations, settings, and groups, influencing expectations about politeness, authority, and boundaries.

In organizational and institutional contexts, neformalnost can refer to informal networks, unwritten conventions, and unofficial practices that complement or override formal rules. Informal processes can speed decisions and strengthen teamwork, yet they may also undermine transparency, consistency, or equity if not checked by clear governance and accountability mechanisms.

Economically, the term is sometimes linked to informal or informalized activity outside formal taxation and regulation, though this usage is more precisely described by terms such as informalni sektor or informal economy. Neformalnost in this sense highlights a cultural or structural tendency toward activities that operate outside formal institutions.

Attitudes toward neformalnost vary by culture and context. Some societies prize spontaneity, relational closeness, and efficiency in informal settings, while others prioritize formal structure, clear rules, and predictable procedures. Understanding when informal norms are appropriate is part of social competence and intercultural communication.
