For instance, in cases of bowel obstruction or after certain surgeries, draining the stomach can help prevent vomiting and reduce discomfort. The procedure for inserting an NG tube typically involves measuring the tube, lubricating it, and gently guiding it through the nasal passage, down the pharynx, esophagus, and into the stomach. Patients may experience some gagging or discomfort during insertion. Proper placement is crucial and is usually confirmed through various methods, such as X-ray, pH testing of aspirate, or auscultation. Removal of the tube is generally straightforward and less uncomfortable than insertion.
