nagyjában

Nagyjában is a Hungarian adverb meaning “in large part; for the most part; generally.” It is used to indicate a broad or approximate scope rather than an exact figure and is commonly employed to soften or generalize a statement. The word can function both in informal speech and in more formal writing.

Etymology and form: nagyjában is built from the adjective nagy (big) plus the possessive suffix -ja, with the locative suffix -ban, yielding the literal sense “in its big part.” A linking consonant j- is used for phonological reasons. As an adverb, it modifies adjectives, verbs, or entire propositions to convey proportion or generality. In addition, it often appears in the longer construction nagyjában véve, which translates roughly to “in general; by and large.”

Usage notes: nagyjában is frequently positioned before the element it modifies or at the start of a clause.
