The word originates from the Slovak root *nad-* meaning "over" or "above" combined with *vláda*, derived from the verb *vládnuť* ("to rule"). In legal and political contexts it frequently describes the exertion of power that exceeds normal limits, such as a regime exercising authoritarian rule or a corporate entity leveraging unfair market advantage.
