Märkäkompostointi, known in English as wet composting or slurry composting, is a method of composting where organic waste is mixed with a significant amount of liquid. This liquid can be water, urine, or other readily available aqueous solutions. The primary characteristic of märkäkompostointi is the high moisture content of the composting material, often exceeding 60-70%. This elevated moisture level accelerates the decomposition process by promoting the activity of microorganisms.

The technique is particularly suited for managing certain types of organic waste, such as food scraps, animal manure, and plant residues that are already quite moist. Unlike dry composting methods that require careful aeration to prevent anaerobic conditions, märkäkompostointi can sometimes operate with less controlled aeration, although proper management is still crucial to avoid foul odors and the production of undesirable byproducts. The increased liquid content also helps to distribute nutrients more evenly throughout the compost pile, potentially leading to a more homogenous and nutrient-rich end product.

Challenges associated with märkäkompostointi include managing the excess liquid, which can be challenging to handle and may require specialized containment systems. Odor control can also be an issue if the process becomes too anaerobic. Despite these challenges, when managed correctly, märkäkompostointi can be an effective way to rapidly break down organic waste and produce compost. It is often employed in agricultural settings or by individuals with access to sufficient quantities of moist organic materials and appropriate handling facilities.
