Muusika is the Estonian word for music and, in common use, denotes both the art of organized sound and the cultural practices surrounding it. It encompasses singing and instrumental performance, composition, and the listener’s experience. Musically, muusika involves elements such as melody, rhythm, harmony, timbre, texture, and dynamics, and it spans traditional folk styles to contemporary genres.

Historically, Estonian muusika has roots in rural vocal traditions, including runosongs (regilaul), as well as church and court music. In the 19th and 20th centuries, composers such as Arvo Pärt, Veljo Tormis, and Eduard Tubin helped shape national and international repertoires. The country developed a strong choral tradition and a vibrant folk music scene, alongside classical, jazz, and pop forms. In recent decades muusika has been influenced by globalization and digital media, while retaining distinctive currents such as minimalism and one-voice polyphony rooted in sacred and folk practice.

Institutions and culture play a central role in Estonia’s muusika scene. Formal music education is provided by institutions like the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, alongside widespread school programs and professional orchestras. The Estonian Song Festival tradition, culminating in large-scale choral events, has been a cornerstone of national culture and was inscribed by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2003. Public broadcasting and private labels support a diverse landscape spanning concert music, jazz, electronic, and popular genres.

Muusika remains central to Estonian life, with active participation by communities, professionals, and audiences. It is studied academically, archived in national collections, and disseminated through live performance and digital media.
