Mutuals are common in financial services and member-based organizations. Mutual insurance companies and mutual societies are traditionally owned by policyholders. Mutual banks and building societies operate as customer-owned lenders. Housing, health, and consumer cooperatives can also take a mutual form. In many jurisdictions, the term “mutual” signals the absence of publicly traded shares, with profits and savings directed to members through lower costs, higher benefits, or reinvestment in member services.

Governance and capital characteristically differ from stock-owned firms. Because ownership resides with members, accountability is oriented toward those members, and voting rights are typically linked to membership rather than investment size. Profits are distributed to members as benefits, such as reduced premiums or better services, or are reinvested in the organization. Capital formation can rely on member contributions and retained earnings, while external equity fundraising is often more limited. Since the late 20th century, some mutuals have demutualized, converting to stock corporations to access capital and scale more quickly, a shift sometimes pursued for competitive reasons, though it can change the organizational emphasis away from member ownership.
