Mutuals, in the context of social media, are users who follow each other. The term denotes a reciprocal connection and is commonly used to describe a subset of a person’s audience with mutual visibility and potential engagement. The precise definition varies by platform: some networks define a mutual strictly as two accounts that follow each other, while others recognize mutuals only if both accounts approve the connection on private accounts.

To identify mutuals, users compare their followers and following lists or rely on platform features that label mutual connections. On many services, mutuals form a core part of a user’s online community, and they can influence what content is more likely to appear in a feed due to engagement signals, interaction history, or algorithmic ranking.

Mutuals are often used strategically: creators and commentators cultivate mutuals to amplify reach, share information, and coordinate collaborations. However, mutual relationships do not guarantee sustained interaction or support and can become a source of echo chambers if users primarily engage with a narrow circle.

Privacy and discretion are considerations around mutuals. Users may prefer private accounts, block or mute non-mutuals, and curate who is allowed to follow them. Etiquette varies, but many communities value respectful engagement and avoid assuming shared beliefs or endorsement simply because someone is a mutual.
