Muodonmuuttaminen, in Finnish folklore and mythology, refers to the ability of a being to change its physical form. This is a common theme in stories across many cultures, but in Finland, it often involves supernatural creatures or enchanted individuals. The term itself translates directly to "shape-changing" or "metamorphosis."

The most well-known muodonmuuttaja is likely the forest spirit, often depicted as capable of transforming into various animals, such as a bear, wolf, or bird, to interact with or deceive humans. This transformation could be used for protection, to observe unseen, or sometimes for malevolent purposes. The ability was not exclusive to spirits; humans, particularly sorcerers or those with magical connections, could also possess this gift.
