Munnvern, or mouthguard, is a protective device worn over the teeth to shield the mouth and surrounding structures from impact during sports and other activities. It is designed to absorb and distribute forces to reduce the risk of dental injuries, lip and cheek lacerations, and jaw injuries. In many sports, upper-mouthguards are the standard; some players also use lower-mouthguards, or two-piece designs for additional protection.

Construction and types include stock mouthguards, which are pre-formed and ready to wear; boil-and-bite models, which are softened in hot water and molded to the teeth; and custom-fitted mouthguards, made from dental impressions for a personalized fit. Common materials include ethylene-vinyl acetate foams and medical-grade silicone. A properly fitted mouthguard should be comfortable, not interfere with breathing or speaking, and stay in place during activity.

Effectiveness and use: there is broad consensus that mouthguards reduce the risk of dental injuries and orofacial injuries, though evidence for a reduction in concussion risk is mixed. Mouthguards are mandatory or strongly recommended in many youth and amateur sports programs, and dental or sports professionals can advise on fit. Care and maintenance include regular cleaning, thorough rinsing after use, and storage in a breathable case; replace the device when damaged or outgrown, and avoid exposure to heat to prevent deformation. Improper fit or use can cause gagging, choking risk, or reduced protection.
