Multiwheel drive (often referred to as multiwheel drive or multiwheel propulsion) is a vehicle propulsion system that utilizes more than two wheels for traction, distributing power across multiple axles to enhance performance, stability, and off-road capability. Unlike conventional two- or four-wheel-drive systems, multiwheel drive configurations can include six, eight, or even more wheels, each contributing to propulsion.

The primary advantage of multiwheel drive is improved traction and load distribution, particularly in challenging terrains such as mud, sand, or steep inclines. By spreading power across multiple wheels, the system reduces the risk of wheel slippage and enhances stability, making it ideal for heavy-duty applications like military vehicles, construction equipment, and specialized off-road vehicles. Some modern off-road and racing vehicles also incorporate multiwheel drive for competitive edge.

Multiwheel drive systems can be categorized based on their wheel arrangement, such as 4x4 (four-wheel drive), 6x6, 8x8, or even more complex configurations like 12x12. In military and industrial settings, articulated vehicles with multiwheel drive—such as tracked or wheeled armored personnel carriers—are common, allowing for better maneuverability and payload capacity. Some commercial trucks and buses also use multiwheel drive to support heavy loads and navigate rough surfaces.

However, multiwheel drive systems come with trade-offs, including increased complexity, higher maintenance requirements, and greater mechanical stress on the drivetrain. The additional weight and cost of multiple wheels and axles can also limit their use in consumer vehicles.
