Multipledistillation, also known as multiple distillation, is the process of performing two or more distillation steps on a liquid mixture to increase separation or purity. It relies on differences in volatility among components: by repeatedly vaporizing and condensing the material, the more volatile components become enriched in successive distillates and the less volatile components remain in the residues.

In a typical setup, an initial distillation separates the mixture into fractions, and the chosen fraction is fed into one or more additional distillation stages. Fractional distillation with a column or additional theoretical plates improves separation by increasing the effective number of stages. Whether carried out in batches or continuously, more stages generally yield higher purity but require more energy and time.

Double distillation and triple distillation are common forms. They are used in the production of high-purity spirits, such as certain neutral vodkas, and in the purification of solvents, essential oils, and chemical intermediates. Industrially, long packed or staged columns enable many distillation steps in a continuous process.

Limitations include energy costs, product losses, and diminishing returns with additional steps. Some mixtures form azeotropes, which resist separation by simple distillation and may require alternative methods such as azeotropic, extractive, or vacuum distillation, or the use of entrainers. In all cases, advances in column design, reflux control, and vacuum can improve efficiency.
