The main goal is to distribute a single stream from a source to multiple receivers efficiently, reducing redundant copies and saving bandwidth compared to sending individual unicast streams to each recipient.

How they work

In multicast networks, sources transmit to a special multicast IP address rather than a unicast address. Routers replicate packets only where necessary to reach groups of listeners. Members indicate their interest by joining a multicast group using protocols such as IGMP for IPv4 or MLD for IPv6. Routing protocols like Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM) build distribution trees that connect sources to group members, forming shared or source-specific trees. The approach supports two main modes: any-source multicast (ASM), where receivers can join groups with any sender, and source-specific multicast (SSM), where membership is tied to a particular source.

Uses and deployment
