mtDNAalueet are the regions of mitochondrial DNA commonly analyzed in genetics, anthropology, and forensic science. Mitochondrial DNA is a small, circular genome inherited maternally and present in many copies per cell. In humans, it measures about 16,569 base pairs and encodes 37 genes: 13 protein-coding, 22 transfer RNA, and 2 ribosomal RNA genes. The large non-coding control region, also called the D-loop, harbors hypervariable segments used for variation studies.
