Motorfeil, or engine fault, refers to a fault in an internal combustion engine or electric motor that impairs normal operation. In vehicles and industrial machinery, motorfeil can lead to reduced power, rough running, increased fuel consumption, or complete shutdown. Faults may be intermittent or persistent and may involve mechanical, electrical, or control-system components.

Common causes include mechanical wear or damage (pistons, rings, valves, bearings), lubrication problems (low oil pressure, degraded oil), cooling system failures (overheating), fuel delivery issues (pump, injectors, dirty fuel), ignition or sensor failures (spark plugs, coils, crank or cam position sensors), and faults in engine-management electronics or wiring. Environmental factors such as contaminated fuel and lack of maintenance can contribute.

Symptoms range from illuminated warning lights and misfires to unusual noises, reduced power, rough idle, increased exhaust emissions, coolant or oil leaks, or engine stalling. A failed cylinder or misfire may be detected with diagnostic trouble codes using OBD systems.

Diagnosis combines on-board diagnostics (OBD) with mechanical tests: compression and leak-down tests, fuel-pressure checks, spark testing, and inspection of belts, hoses, cooling and lubrication systems. Some faults require specialist tools or bench testing of components.

Treatment depends on cause and may involve replacing worn components, repairing sensors or wiring, cleaning or replacing injectors, timing-belt/chain replacement, oil and filter changes, or, in severe cases, engine overhauls or replacement.

Prevention focuses on regular maintenance, using correct fluids, timely oil changes, air-filter replacement, fuel system care, cooling-system maintenance, and addressing warning signs promptly.
