Moottoritraanit is a Finnish term referring to self-propelled railway vehicles, typically used for passenger or mixed services. The term describes rail vehicles that move under their own power, forming multiple-unit trains with one or more powered cars and any number of unpowered trailers. The concept grew from early self-propelled railcars and evolved into diesel and electric multiple units used for regional and commuter services.

In Finland and other Nordic countries, moottoritraanit were widely deployed on branch lines and suburban routes where locomotive-hauled trains were less economical. They offered flexible service patterns, allowing capacity to be adjusted by configuring the number of units in a train set. Over time, designs transitioned from primitive or wooden construction to modern, purpose-built DMUs and EMUs.

Design and technology: Modern moottoritraanit are usually diesel or electric multiple units comprising several powered and unpowered carriages linked to form a train set. Traction systems vary by era and country, including diesel-mechanical, diesel-electric, and electric propulsion from overhead lines or third-rail systems. Traction motors drive axle groups, and braking typically combines air brakes with, in newer units, regenerative braking to recover energy.
