Mootorpidurid, also known as engine brakes or exhaust brakes, are devices that use the engine's internal mechanics to slow down a vehicle, typically trucks and buses. They work by modifying the engine's normal operation to create a retarding force. There are several types of motorpidurid, each with its own mechanism.

One common type is the exhaust brake. This system restricts the flow of exhaust gases from the engine by closing a valve in the exhaust manifold. This restriction causes backpressure, which the engine must work against, thus generating a braking effect. This type is generally less powerful than other motorpidurid but is effective for maintaining speed on descents.

Another type is the compression release engine brake, often referred to by brand names like Jake Brake. This system modifies the valve timing. When the piston reaches the top of its compression stroke, an exhaust valve is opened, releasing the compressed air and eliminating the power stroke that would normally follow. This rapid release of compressed air creates a significant braking force.

A third type is the variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) engine brake. In this system, the VGT's vanes are adjusted to create exhaust restriction, similar to an exhaust brake, but with more control and potentially greater braking power.

Motorpidurid are primarily used to reduce wear on the service brakes, especially during long descents, and to improve vehicle control. They are an important safety feature for heavy vehicles, allowing drivers to manage speed without overheating or damaging their primary braking system. Their use can also contribute to fuel efficiency by allowing for slower, more controlled braking.
