monsignor

Monsignor is an honorary title conferred by the Pope upon certain Roman Catholic clergy. It is not an order of ordination itself, but rather a distinction that acknowledges a priest's significant service or achievements within the Church. The title derives from the Italian word "monsignore," meaning "my lord."

Clergy who hold the title of Monsignor are generally expected to be priests, though some deacons may also be appointed. The appointment is typically made at the request of a bishop, who recommends priests for the honor based on various criteria, including age, length of service, administrative responsibilities, or pastoral dedication.

There are several ranks of Monsignor. The most common is "Chaplain of His Holiness," which is a protonotary apostolic *ad instar participantium*. Higher ranks include "protonotary apostolic," "apostolic protonotary titular," and "domestic prelate." Each rank carries specific privileges and ceremonial distinctions.

Monsignori often serve in significant administrative roles within dioceses or in the Roman Curia, the Vatican's central administrative body. They may also be appointed as parish rectors or hold other important positions. The title allows them to wear certain vestments that distinguish them from ordinary priests, such as a purple cassock and fascia. While the title is an honor, it does not grant any additional sacramental powers beyond those of a priest.
