monofil

Monofil, short for monofilament, refers to a single, continuous filament made from a synthetic polymer. Unlike braided or multifilament strands, a monofilament has a uniform diameter along its length and typically a smooth, round cross-section. It is used in a wide range of applications because of its clarity, strength, and predictable performance.

Common materials include nylon (polyamide), polyester (PET), fluorinated polymers such as PVDF and PTFE, and biocompatible polymers used in medical devices. In fishing, monofilament lines are predominantly nylon or fluorocarbon, whereas dental floss and surgical sutures use nylon or PTFE variants. Monofilaments are produced by melt extrusion through a spinneret, followed by quenching and drawing to set the final diameter and strength. The result is a single continuous strand with relatively low surface roughness and minimal twist.

Applications vary: fishing lines for their low stretch and high clarity; dental floss and surgical sutures for precise passage through tissue; textile and craft uses as a thread; and 3D printing filaments, which are often referred to as monofilaments when a single material is extruded in a uniform strand. Advantages include simple construction, consistent diameter, low fuzz, and good abrasion resistance depending on material. Disadvantages include higher stiffness, greater memory (tendency to retain coiled shape), and lower elasticity compared with multifilament alternatives.
