Moniteur-éducateur is a professional in the French social and medico-social sector who works with children, adolescents or adults in situations of disability, vulnerability or social difficulty. They are employed in a variety of settings, such as residential facilities, day centers, educational or social support services, and hospital or medico-social establishments. Their role is to support the daily life, education and social integration of service users, to foster autonomy and participation in group life, and to help individuals develop personal and social skills.

The responsibilities of a moniteur-éducateur include planning and implementing activities that promote learning, autonomy and social participation; supervising and guiding groups or individuals in daily routines; ensuring safety and appropriate behavior in collective settings; accompanying service users in educational and leisure outings; and collaborating with families and with a multidisciplinary team to contribute to individualized projects and care plans. They may also assist with administrative tasks related to project documentation and progress reporting.

Training and regulation: Access to the profession has traditionally required a state-recognized diploma, such as the Brevet Professionnel de Moniteur-Éducateur (BPME) or the Diplôme d’État de Moniteur-Éducateur (DEME). Since mid-2010s reforms, these diplomas have been reorganized within the Diplôme d’État d’Accompagnant Éducatif et Social (DEAES), with the moniteur-éducateur function encompassed within that framework. The work is governed by the relevant codes and professional guidelines in France.

Career paths may include progression to higher-level educational roles or further training to become an éducateur spécialisé, or to take on supervisory responsibilities within teams.
