Monisäikeisyys, often referred to as SMT (Simultaneous Multithreading) in technical contexts, is a technique used in computer processor design to improve performance. It allows a single processor core to execute multiple threads of instructions concurrently. Instead of waiting for one thread to complete a lengthy operation, such as fetching data from memory, the processor can switch to another thread and execute its instructions. This keeps the processor's execution units busy more of the time, leading to higher throughput.

SMT is distinct from traditional multithreading, where multiple threads might be switched in and out of a single core by the operating system. SMT is a hardware-level feature. When a core has multiple independent threads ready to execute, SMT enables it to fetch instructions from more than one thread in the same clock cycle. The processor then uses its various execution units, such as integer arithmetic logic units and floating-point units, to process these instructions from different threads in parallel.

The primary benefit of SMT is increased processor utilization and thus improved performance for workloads that involve many concurrent tasks or threads that frequently encounter delays. For example, in server environments or when running multiple applications simultaneously, SMT can significantly boost overall system responsiveness. However, SMT does not double the performance of a core, as the execution units are shared, and there can be contention for these resources. The effectiveness of SMT also depends on the specific architecture of the processor and the nature of the software being run.
