The most widely known figure associated with the name is Man Haron Monis (c. 1964–2014), an Iranian-born Australian Islamic cleric who became known for the 2014 Sydney siege. Monis arrived in Australia in the 1990s and became a controversial figure in some public discussions, including his views on religion and politics and a history of involvement with the criminal justice system. He faced multiple charges in Australia, including sexual offences, and was released on bail in 2013 while awaiting trial on various charges.
