Momenttianalyysiä, known in English as moment analysis, is a statistical technique used to characterize probability distributions. It relies on the calculation of moments, which are statistical values that describe the shape and properties of a distribution. The most common moments are the mean (first moment), variance (second central moment), skewness (third central moment), and kurtosis (fourth central moment). The mean indicates the center of the distribution, variance measures its spread, skewness describes its asymmetry, and kurtosis quantifies its "tailedness" or the presence of outliers.

This method involves deriving a theoretical expression for these moments based on a given probability distribution model. This theoretical expression is then equated to the sample moments calculated from observed data. By solving these equations, the parameters of the probability distribution can be estimated. For example, if we assume a normal distribution, its theoretical mean is a parameter $\mu$ and its theoretical variance is a parameter $\sigma^2$. We would then calculate the sample mean and sample variance from our data and set them equal to $\mu$ and $\sigma^2$ to estimate these parameters.

Moment analysis is a straightforward and intuitive method for parameter estimation. It is particularly useful when dealing with distributions where analytical solutions are available for the moments. However, it can be less efficient than other estimation methods like maximum likelihood estimation, especially for smaller sample sizes or when the distribution is complex. Despite this, its simplicity makes it a valuable tool in many statistical applications, especially as a starting point or for quick estimations.
