Modtagers refers to devices or subsystems that receive signals or data from another source within a communication system. In Danish and Norwegian, the term translates to receivers. They function at the end of a link, converting transmitted information into usable form for the user or system.

Common types include hardware receivers (radio receivers, TV tuners, Ethernet or optical network receivers, satellite receivers) and software-defined receivers where the processing is done in software on a computer or embedded device. Some systems combine hardware front-ends with software demodulation.

Operation: a modtager captures the signal via an antenna or input, filters it, downconverts or digitizes, demodulates or decodes, and delivers the data or audio/video output. Key performance metrics include sensitivity (minimum detectable signal), selectivity (ability to separate channels), noise figure, and dynamic range.

Architectures range from traditional superheterodyne receivers to direct-conversion and software-defined radio, which use minimal analog processing and rely on digital processing. Applications span broadcasting (radio, TV), telecommunications networks, data communication (Wi-Fi, cellular client receivers), and IoT gateways.
