Modrons are lawful neutral creatures originating from Mechanus, a plane of absolute order. They are constructs composed of geometric shapes and metallic components, embodying the perfect balance of law and order. Modrons come in various forms, each with a specific rank and function within their hierarchical society. The simplest are the monodrones, followed by duodrones, tridrones, and so on, culminating in the powerful pentadrone and the legendary matriarch, the Enforcer.

Their existence is dictated by the Great Modron Machina, a cosmic engine that governs their every action and thought. Modrons do not possess individual personalities or free will; they are extensions of Mechanus's will. Their primary objective is to maintain and enforce universal order. They are known for their rigid adherence to rules and protocols, often undertaking patrols or missions that involve correcting deviations from established norms.

When a modron is damaged or destroyed, its components are often reabsorbed into Mechanus to be reformed. Despite their mechanical nature, they are considered living beings within the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. Their lawful nature makes them predictable, yet their alien mindset can be difficult for chaotic or even good-aligned creatures to comprehend. They are rarely encountered outside of Mechanus unless on specific missions or during the Great Modron March, a periodic event where vast numbers of modrons march from Mechanus to quell chaos in other planes.
