moderat

Moderat is a German electronic music project formed in Berlin in 2002 by Apparat (Sascha Ring) and Modeselektor (Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary). The collaboration blends Apparat’s melodic, cinematic approach with Modeselektor’s bass-driven, rhythmic production, producing a sound that combines atmospheric textures with punchy beats and emotive vocal lines. Moderat releases have appeared on BPitch Control and Monkeytown Records.

The project released its self-titled debut album, Moderat, in 2009, followed by II in 2013 and III in 2016. Each album melds accessible, song-oriented structures with experimental electronics, drawing from IDM, techno, and pop influences. Moderat is noted for live performances that emphasize immersive audiovisual presentation and a blend of electronic programming with live instrumentation.

Moderat has gained international recognition through festival appearances and extensive touring across Europe, North America, and other regions. The music is often described as a bridge between experimental electronic music and more mainstream, emotionally resonant songs, reflecting a balance of melodic composition, innovative sound design, and club-ready rhythms.

As a collaboration rather than a fixed band, Moderat maintains a dynamic core comprised of Apparat and Modeselektor, continuing to produce and perform under the Moderat name. The project remains part of the broader Berlin electronic-music scene and minority-label collaborations, contributing to the international profile of both Apparat and Modeselektor.
