A modemrouter is a single networking device that combines a modem and a router in one enclosure. It connects to an internet service provider's network and distributes connectivity to local devices through wired Ethernet ports and a built‑in wireless access point.

It includes a modem function to establish the connection with the ISP and a router function to create a home network, assign IP addresses via DHCP, perform Network Address Translation, and route traffic between the local network and the internet. Most models also provide security features such as a firewall, parental controls, and basic VPN support.

Common types and deployment scenarios include devices provided by ISPs as gateways, which fuse modem and router capabilities for consumer use. In other setups, users connect a separate modem to an independent router; in such cases the gateway can be put into bridge mode to bypass routing features, reducing double NAT and giving the user full control over advanced settings.

Connection standards and interfaces vary by service: cable networks use DOCSIS, DSL uses PPPoE or PPPoA, and fiber networks typically provide Ethernet from an optical network terminal. Modemrouters usually include multiple Ethernet LAN ports and sometimes USB ports, along with wireless standards such as Wi‑Fi 5/6 (and increasingly Wi‑Fi 6E) for domestic coverage.

Configuration and security are typically managed through a web interface or a mobile app. Basic best practices include changing default passwords, enabling WPA2/WPA3, applying firmware updates, and using a guest network when needed.

When choosing a modemrouter, consider compatibility with your ISP, supported features (QoS, VLANs, IGMP), wireless performance, and whether you prefer a gateway device or a separate router behind bridge mode for advanced networking needs.
