Mitta muuntajat are electrical devices used to reduce high voltages or currents to levels that are safe and suitable for measuring instruments. They are essential components in electrical power systems for monitoring and control. There are two main types: voltage transformers (VTs) and current transformers (CTs).

Voltage transformers, also known as potential transformers, step down high voltages to a standard low voltage, typically 100V or 110V, which can be safely handled by voltmeters, protective relays, and other low-voltage measurement equipment. They operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction, similar to power transformers, but are designed with a higher turns ratio and are operated with a continuous load.

Current transformers reduce high currents to a standard low value, usually 1A or 5A, for use with ammeters, wattmeters, and protective relays. They are connected in series with the primary circuit. The primary winding has very few turns, often just the conductor passing through the transformer's core, while the secondary winding has many turns. This creates a proportional low current in the secondary circuit, mirroring the primary current.

Mitta muuntajat are crucial for the accurate measurement of electrical power, voltage, and current in power grids, substations, and industrial facilities. They ensure the safety of personnel and equipment by isolating measurement devices from high-voltage or high-current circuits.
