Firstly, fixed costs, such as those for machinery, rent, and research and development, are spread over a larger number of units. This dilution of fixed costs lowers the per-unit burden. Secondly, larger-scale operations can often negotiate better prices for raw materials and components due to bulk purchasing power. Suppliers are more willing to offer discounts to customers who commit to larger orders.

Furthermore, specialized labor and machinery become more feasible and efficient at higher production volumes. Companies can invest in specialized equipment and train workers for specific tasks, leading to increased productivity and reduced labor costs per unit. Inefficient processes can be optimized, and automation can be implemented more effectively when production levels are substantial.

Technological advancements also play a role. Larger businesses may have the resources to invest in cutting-edge technology that further enhances efficiency and reduces production costs. This can include improved manufacturing processes, advanced logistics, and more sophisticated management systems.

However, it is important to note that economies of scale are not infinite. Beyond a certain point, a company may encounter diseconomies of scale, where the average cost per unit begins to rise again due to issues like increased complexity, communication breakdowns, and bureaucratic inefficiencies.
