Misspeaks refer to utterances produced in spontaneous speech that contain errors in word choice, form, or pronunciation. They arise from normal processes of language production and are common across speakers and contexts. The term covers a range of phenomena including slips of the tongue, misnaming, malapropisms, and other unintentional utterances.

Common forms include slips of the tongue, such as phonological slips (sound substitutions and exchanges) and lexical substitutions (saying the wrong word). Spoonerisms are a well-known subtype in which initial sounds are swapped. Malapropisms involve using an incorrect but similar-sounding word, often producing humorous or confusing results. Misnaming occurs when the intended term is replaced with another item from the same category or a related concept.

Causes and underlying processes are often discussed in cognitive and psycholinguistic terms. Misspeaks reflect the planning and execution stages of speech production, where competing lexical items or phonological forms can intrude on an intended utterance. Factors that raise error likelihood include high cognitive load, fatigue, distraction, stress, rapid or public speaking, and, in bilinguals, interference from another language. The brain’s lexical retrieval and phonological encoding processes are central to why such errors occur.

Social effects and corrections vary. Speakers frequently self-correct, and many misspeaks are dismissed as minor slips, especially when context invites quick refunds. However, in public or formal settings, misspeaks can affect perceived credibility or competence, particularly if they are frequent or reveal gaps in knowledge. Misspeaks are a normal part of language use and research into them helps illuminate how speech is planned and produced.
