Minirizotrons are small-scale experimental devices used to study root growth and development in plants. The term "minirizotron" is a combination of "mini," indicating its small size, and "rhizotron," a term derived from Greek words meaning "root" and "place." These devices are essentially transparent tubes or chambers inserted into the soil, allowing for direct observation of root systems as they grow.

Typically, minirizotrons consist of a clear acrylic or glass tube with a mesh at one end to allow for water and air exchange while preventing soil loss. The tube is usually installed vertically or at an angle within a soil profile. Plant seeds are sown in the soil within the tube, or seedlings are transplanted. As the roots grow, they press against the transparent walls of the tube, making their patterns, lengths, and branching visible.

Researchers use minirizotrons to investigate various aspects of root biology. This includes studying the effects of different soil conditions, nutrient availability, water stress, or plant genotypes on root architecture. They can also be used to track the growth rate of roots over time and to observe interactions between roots and microorganisms. While limited in the total soil volume they represent, minirizotrons offer a practical and cost-effective method for gaining insights into root dynamics that would be difficult to obtain through field studies or larger rhizotrons.
