Mineral-saturated is a term used in geochemistry, geology, and related fields to describe a state in which a solution or system is in equilibrium with a particular mineral phase. When a solution is mineral-saturated for a given mineral, it has reached a balance between dissolution and precipitation for that mineral under the prevailing temperature, pressure, and chemical conditions.

In practice, saturation is quantified using activity concepts. The ion activity product (IAP) of the dissolving ions is compared to the mineral’s solubility product (Ksp). A common metric is the saturation index (SI), defined as SI = log10(IAP/Ksp). An SI of zero indicates saturation; SI greater than zero indicates supersaturation (potential for precipitation); and SI less than zero indicates undersaturation (tendency for dissolution). These calculations depend on temperature, pH, complexation, ionic strength, and the presence of competing minerals.

Applications of the concept include predicting mineral formation or dissolution in natural waters, groundwater and lake chemistry, and industrial contexts such as scaling in pipes, cement hydration, and dental enamel remineralization. In rocks and soils, mineral saturation helps explain weathering rates, ore deposition, and soil mineral availability to organisms.

Measurement and modeling rely on thermodynamic data for mineral solubilities and activities, often implemented in geochemical codes such as PHREEQC or MINTEQ. Real systems may exhibit kinetics, metastable states, or multi-mineral competition that alter apparent saturation. Consequently, saturation is a useful, but nuanced, descriptor of mineral–solution interactions rather than an absolute predictor of behavior.
